The NOAA FishWatch Program defines sustainable seafood as “catching or farming seafood responsibly, with consideration for the long-term health of the environment and the livelihoods of the people that depend upon the environment.” As a consumer, you can choose seafood caught or farmed in a manner that sustains the long-term vitality of harvested species. Sustainable fishing avoids impacts to ocean habitats and uses fishing gear that reduces by-catch of non-target species.

By purchasing sustainable seafood you can help maintain healthier ocean ecosystems that will exist long into the future. Consumers who take these small steps will have a major impact on our oceans:

  • Educate yourself on how to make sustainable seafood choices.
  • Inquire with your restaurant or seafood retailer.
  • Where is the fish from?
  • How is it caught?
  • Is it procured from responsibly managed, sustainable and healthy fisheries?
  • Buy from restaurants and retailers that use sustainable seafood sources

Information on sustainable seafood is widely available from NOAA and many other sources:
