Route 66 in Wheeler County is of statewide significance under National Register Criteria A and C in the areas of Transportation and Engineering. A component of the first major transcontinental automobile transportation route from Chicago to Los Angeles, the 8 (discontiguous) segments of roadway reflect the significant early road building efforts of the Federal Highway System in Texas. These segments of historic Route 66 served as main transportation links in the region from 1932-1970, when the Route 66 roadway was replaced by the modern Interstate 40. The 18' wide concrete paved segments, among the best preserved in the state, also reveal the evolution of early twentieth century road construction technology and engineering. The property meets the Registration Requirements of the Route 66 in Texas MPS.
