Soon after the first reported sightings of the Bell Witch by John Bell, Sr. and his family in 1817, visitors started coming to the cave in the hope of seeing the witch. The nomination’s context documents tourist development in the early 19th through the 20th century and demonstrates the significance of Bell Witch Cave as an early example of the marketing of tourism locations.
