A 1935 Act of Congress established the National Park System Advisory Board (NPSAB) to advise the Secretary of the Interior on park-related matters. These can include the restoration, reconstruction, conservation, and administration of historic and archeological sites in national park units. Today, the twelve-member board advises the Director of the National Park Service and the Secretary of the Interior on issues relating to national parks and programs managed by the NPS. One of the many roles of the board is to make recommendations on National Historic Landmarks, National Natural Landmarks, and proposed National Historic Trails.
The NPSAB National Historic Landmarks Committee is an essential part in the review of NHL nominations.
