The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties are common sense historic preservation principles in non-technical language. They promote historic preservation best practices that will help to protect our nation’s irreplaceable cultural resources.

 

Tax Incentives for Preserving Historic Properties

The Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives program encourages private sector investment in the rehabilitation and re-use of historic buildings. It creates jobs and is one of the nations most successful and cost-effective community revitalization programs. It has leveraged over $96.87 billion in private investment to preserve 44,341 historic properties since 1976. The National Park Service and the Internal Revenue Service administer the program in partnership with State Historic Preservation Office.

 

Maintenance Requirements for Leased Properties

In general, Lessees are responsible for the repair and maintenance of the leased structures and associated lands including the performance of all:

• repairs
• maintenance
• replacement
• upgrading
• capital improvements
• maintaining the grounds of the premises in good condition, including:
  • regular grass mowing
  • managed lawn and ornamental plantings
  • avoidance or removal of unsightly storage or parking of materials, equipment, or vehicles

Lessee is also responsible for paying to the proper authority all taxes and assessments imposed by federal, state, or local agencies applicable to the Premises or the Lessee’s activities on the Premises.
