A Russian American Company employee, Il’ia Nepogod’ev sailed to the Channel Islands to distribute supplies and collect sea otter skins from company hunters. When on San Nicolas Island in 1814, Nepogod’ev learned an Alaskan hunter was killed by the Nicoleños and that the other hunters killed many Nicoleños in return. He wrote to company manager Alexander Baranov about the massacre.
