Parks complete assessments on a recurring cycle. This action provides the basis for long-range maintenance planning as well as annual work and budget planning. Assessments also help parks develop deficiency cost estimates and determine the current condition of a facility.
Information about those constructed assets is entered into a database and managed by the park. At the end of each fiscal year, the NPS Park Facility Management Division takes a snapshot of maintenance data across the National Park System and generates final annual deferred maintenance statistics for its portfolio of more than 75,000 constructed assets. Due to the changing nature of facilities data, only final, year-end figures are reported to ensure a consistent reference point. The NPS does not report "live" data or update reports on request. The snapshot of year-end data is quoted in response to information requests from the Department of the Interior, Office of Management and Budget, Congress, media, and others. Annual snapshots also provide uniform reporting from year to year as we track the overall trend of deferred maintenance.
Deferred maintenance reports are available for fiscal years 2014 through 2018.
