Fossil Parks—Age of Fossil Resources

List of Parks and Age(s) of Their Fossils

This listing of park units displays fossil parks by name and shows the age(s) of their fossil resources. The table has many blanks because the rock record is not continuous in most areas, AND it is extremely rare for fossils to form and be preserved. Despite the odds against fossilization and apparent gaps in the table below, the National Park System includes a remarkably rich fossil record representing every time period of the history of life on Earth! Notes for exploring the table:

  • Younger fossils occur more frequently and are listed in columns on the right side of the table. (Use the scroll bar at the bottom of the table to reach these records.)

  • The clickable column headings can be used to sort the table by your favorite geologic age and discover NPS areas that share fossil resources of similar age. (The first click may bring blank records to the top, click a second time to group same age parks at the top.)

  • A few exceptional parks have fairly complete fossil records across time, including Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Lake Mead, and Yukon-Charley Rivers. Can you find other parks like these?
