Cultural Landscapes of National Capital Parks-East

Cultural Landscape Profiles

National Capital Parks-East includes a diverse collection of 13 park units encompassing more than 8,000 acres of largely urban lands within the greater Washington, DC area and nearby Maryland suburbs. These park units, which include sites such as the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, Greenbelt Park, Suitland Parkway, Civil War Defenses of Washington and the Capitol Hill Parks, protect a broad range of significant natural and cultural resources.

Within the boundaries of National Capital Parks-East, a multitude of cultural landscapes embody the resources that reflect the last 225 years of the national capital region’s growth and development, including those sites associated with America’s ongoing story of civil rights and social justice. Moreover, the park also preserves sites that contain archeological evidence of tens of thousands of years of American Indian lifeways in the region.
