In the mid-19th century, the Southwest region became part of the United States and was organized into states. Archeology there tells about the contacts between Native peoples and newcomers; Spanish explorers and missionaries; American and Mexican soldiers; and the ranchers and settlers who sent word of the land’s scientific and resource value back East.
