The Trails & Rails Program is part of the National Park Service’s Volunteers-in-Parks (VIP) program.
Join the Fun & Excitement Serving as a Volunteer with the Trails & Rails Program
- VIPs are not paid, and are not considered federal employees by the U.S. government;
- VIPs are eligible for compensation for medical expenses if injured while performing official duties;
- VIPs are required to meet Amtrak physical requirements annually, and successfully complete mandatory training classes;
- VIPs should live within a reasonable commuting distance in areas where Trails & Rails programs are based; and The National Park Service and Amtrak do not provide funds for local transportation and lodging.
