NPS Class I Areas

There are 48 units of the National Park System with Class I areas. In some cases only the wilderness portion of a unit is designated as Class I, because that section met the designation criteria in 1977 when the Clean Air Act was amended. In addition, there is one Class I area that the NPS co-manages with Canada as an international park.
