Staff rides remain an integral part of Professional Military Education, as well as a viable tool to foster Esprit-de-corps within a unit or a unit’s leadership team. A well-designed staff ride challenges participants to use their own experiences and knowledge as they play an active role in a discussion of decisions and other factors that impacted the outcome of past battles while viewing the actual terrain. Through the use of the staff ride, future leaders can learn how to use past events and decisions, to enhance their critical reasoning and thinking skills to apply in our nation’s future conflicts. Conducting staff rides on the actual terrain also provides the ability to “unplug” from day-to-day operations and focus on the understanding and ability to apply the principles of war. ![]() NPS Photo ![]() Library of Congress Brief History of Staff Rides
