Description

Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park hosts the oldest continual artist residency program in the National Park Service. Begun in 1969 by the Saint-Gaudens Memorial, the presence of a figurative sculptor continues to inform and inspire visitors to this day while working in the inspiring setting of renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ New Hampshire estate.

Each visitor season, one sculptor-in-residence runs an open studio in the historic Ravine Studio, working on their own projects and demonstrating the sculptural process to visitors. The full-time position runs from mid-May to mid-October with some planning responsibilities before arriving on site. The sculptor-in-residence program in administered by the park's nonprofit partner, the Saint-Gaudens Memorial, as an independent contractor.

Duties

  • Operate a sculpting studio that is welcoming for park visitors to visit and learn about a sculptor's creative process. Open studio hours are typically Thursday through Monday from 10am to 4pm. Alterations to the established schedule may be accommodated with approval of park staff in advance.
  • Develop and lead a series of 6-10 sculpture workshops ranging in topic, length, and skill level.
  • Provide short, scheduled public sculpture demonstrations four times a week.
  • Support periodic park-led education and outreach programs throughout the season including conducting short hands-on art activities.
  • Help to coordinate the park's annual Art in the Park Festival.
  • Foster culture of cooperation, respect, and safety as a contributing member of the Visitor Services team that includes park rangers, young professionals, and volunteers.
  • Represent the National Park Service and Saint-Gaudens Memorial professionally when interacting with visitors and adhere to all policies, guidelines, and laws in place by the park, National Park Service, and federal government.
