Davis Fandiño has been selected as the 2024 Sculptor-in-Residence for Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park.
During his residency, Fandiño will host open studios at the historic Ravine Studio Wednesday – Sunday and teach a series of sculpture workshops. Visitors are invited to witness the artist at work and learn about the process of sculpture from Memorial Day weekend through October.
"We're looking forward to hosting Davis this upcoming 2024 season and being part of his growing process as he evolves as an artist," says Superintendent Rick Kendall. "He is affable and eager to share his knowledge and experience. We're excited to see how his talent and enthusiasm will engage and inspire visitors to the park who either visit him at the Ravine Studio during open studio hours or who join one of his sculptural workshops."
Fandiño is a professional sculptor living and working in Bentonville, Arkansas. He began his artistic studies as an assistant and apprentice in sculpture studios, foundries, and mold-making shops before moving to Los Angeles to work as a sculptor for special-effects studios. He worked in the film industry for over a decade and was involved in the production of major blockbuster movies. During that time, he also continued to pursue fine-art studies, spending months between projects working in stone-carving sculpture studios in Carrara, Italy. He now completes private commissions from his personal studio and is working towards creating a body of work that encompasses his experiences and studies over the past 20 years.
“To have the time to dedicate to the practice of art and be immersed in a world created for that purpose by Augustus Saint-Gaudens is why I sought the opportunity to be sculptor-in-residence at the park,” says Fandiño. “I look forward to sharing this time with visitors that are seeking inspiration as well.”
Throughout the summer season, Fandiño will conduct a series of sculpture workshops. Topics for introductory one-day workshops included drawing from sculpture (6/22 and 6/29) and portrait sculpture in half life-size (7/6). Students seeking more intensive experiences can sign up for workshops on expression mask sculpture (7/13-7/14), portrait sculpture (8/2-8/4), bas relief medallions (8/10 and 8/17), and plaster casting (8/24). Registration for workshops is available online at www.nps.gov/saga/sculpture-workshop.
Begun in 1969, the Sculptor-in-Residence program is oldest continual artist residency program in the National Park Service. The program is made possible through a collaboration between the national park and Saint-Gaudens Memorial.
The park is open daily between Memorial Day weekend and October 31. To learn more about Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park and park programs and events, visit www.nps.gov/saga
