Contact: Lynn Cullivan, 415-561-7006 New Exhibit Showcases the Skills and Techniques of the Sailors’ Trade In the Maritime Museum, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park San Francisco, CA - With rope, wood, a brush and even a camera, sailors and artisans used their skills to transform maritime experiences into beautiful and enduring forms. "Maritime Arts - At Sea and Ashore," a new exhibit opening January 28, 2016 in San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park’s Maritime Museum, showcases remarkable examples of work from the sailors’ trade. "Maritime Arts" is open daily, from 10am-4pm, with no admission fee. Lobby exhibits include detailed scrimshaw, artwork, and a carved rudder yoke (part of a boat’s steering system) adorned with fancy metalwork. A figurehead is painted to represent a character in a Walter Scott poem, and a burlwood block is hand-shaped into a “mast truck” (the ball which sits atop a mast). In the Prismatarium, blow-ups of professionally-shot glass plates and snapshots from officers’ family photo albums tell proud, sweet and heartbreaking stories, including: sailors’ animal companions, a well-composed photo of the riverboat Fort Sutter’s 1912 Hunters Point launch, and a fateful crew portrait of the Andelena taken just three days before she capsized with all hands lost. San Francisco Maritime NHP is located at the west end of Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco.
