In 1851 members of the New York Yacht Club built and sailed the racing sloop yacht America to England to participate in the yacht races scheduled as part of the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations held in London. The America participated in only one race sponsored by the royal Yacht Club during the final days of the exposition, a race which she won. The New Yorkers presented this model to their opponent. The model's plaque reads, "Contemporary Model of the Yacht America Winner of the Memorable Race for the Royal Squadron Cup around the Isle of Wight Course, August 22, 1851. This Model was given by the Winner to Mr. Le Marchant, Owner of the Aurora, Second in the Race." The Royal Squadron Cup 100 Guinea Cup won by the America became known as the America's Cup, the coveted yacht racing prize that yachtsmen around the world dream of winning.
