Alternate Routes for Trail Ridge Road

When Trail Ridge Road is closed due to unsafe road conditions or is closed for the season, you may need an alternate route between Estes Park and Grand Lake. You should allow three or four hours driving time.

 

 

To get to Grand Lake from Estes Park via U.S. 40 (distance 143 miles):

South on Colorado 7 to Colorado 72
South on Colorado 72 to Nederland
South on Colorado 119 to U.S. 6 west
Take U.S. 6 west to Interstate 70 west
West on Interstate 70 to U.S. 40 west
Take U.S. 40 west to Granby (to get to Steamboat Springs, continue on U.S. 40)
Take U.S. 34 east to Grand Lake

To get to Grand Lake froom Estes Park via Colorado 14 (distance 182 miles):

East on U.S. 34 to Loveland
North on U.S. 287 to Fort Collins
West on Colorado 14 to Walden (Continue on Colorado 14 to U.S. 40, West on U.S. 40 to Steamboat Springs)
South on Colorado 125 to U.S. 40 east
Take U.S. 40 east to Granby
Take U.S. 34 east to Grand Lake
