Crater Lake National Park has been a site for scientific research for well over 100 years. As early as 1886, the Dutton expedition made up of scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey came to Crater Lake to take the first ever measurements of its depth at various locations. Since that time scientists have used the park as a unique outdoor laboratory. Their investigations have provided valuable insights to the ecology of the park.
