Benedict Arnold had switched sides the year before, in 1780. That same year Richmond became the state capital. In January 1781, Arnold led British and Hessian troops in capturing the town, driving American militia off the hill where the Chimborazo Medical Museum now stands. The King’s forces occupied the city for 24 hours, destroying supplies. Before the end of the year, many of these troops would be laying down their arms at Yorktown. The Arnold’s Raid event is an annual special event focused on the Revolution in Richmond.

All activities are free. For more information contact Park Ranger Bert Dunkerly at bert_dunkerly@nps.gov or Historic St. John’s Church at (804) 648-5015.
