Natural History: The Whimbrel moslty forages for invertebrates but may also eat some seeds, berries, and leaves. It breeds in the arctic. General Distribution: In the Presidio, this species can be found in areas of tidal sand and rock. Frequency: This species is common during the spring, winter, and fall seasons. Identifying Characteristics: This large, mottled, light brown sandpiper has a long, downcurved beak and a prominently striped crown and eye line. |
