Description

SHILOH, Tennessee – On Saturday, August 17, Shiloh will host a special birthday celebration with music on the battlefield. The National Park Service will turn 103 years old on August 25, and our partner Hardin County will turn 200 this November. To commemorate the dual birthdays we are proud to present Lee Greenwood live in concert on the battlefield.

“This is the fourth year of our Summer Concert Series, and we are proud to partner with Hardin County and Tour Hardin County to bring this high level entertainment to the local community,” said Shiloh Superintendent Dale Wilkerson. “Teaming up to celebrate both birthdays on Shiloh Battlefield, one of the true treasures of Hardin County and West Tennessee, just made sense to all of us.”

Grammy winner Lee Greenwood, best known for his patriotic hit “God Bless the USA,” has released more than 30 albums over his four decades in the music business. With seven #1 songs & 25 charted singles his hits include: “It Turns Me Inside Out”, “Ring On Her Finger Time on Her Hands”, ”She’s Lyin”, “I don’t Mind the Thorns if You’re the Rose”, “Dixie Road”, “Somebody’s Gonna Love You”, “Going Going Gone”, “You Got A Good Love Comin”, “Fools Gold”, and “Mornin Ride”. Several cross over hits include, “Touch & Go Crazy”, “IOU” and the duet with Barbara Mandrell, “To Me”. An additional duet with Suzie Boggus, “Hopelessly Yours”, was nominated for a Grammy. The CD “American Patriot”, recorded & released in 1992, went Platinum in 3 months.

Lee Greenwood has won numerous industry awards including, Male Vocalist of the year for the Academy of Country Music in 1983, two Male Vocalist of the Year awards from the Country Music Association, 1983 & 1984 and a Grammy for Top Male Vocal Performance in 1985 for “I.O.U.”. He also won CMA Song of the Year in 1985 for writing “God Bless the USA.” The song, “God Bless the USA” has been voted the most recognizable patriotic song in America.

Opening the show will be Alabama Singer/Songwriter Joseph Baldwin. Baldwin has released eight CDs and has an award-winning state song under his belt. In 2011, Baldwin won the Alabama Year of Music Songwriters Contest, with his song “I’m Alabama” beating out 138 other songwriters. “I’m Alabama” became the official song of Alabama state tourism. “Baldwin plays around 200 shows a year and we are happy to have him open our special birthday concert on the park,” said Wilkerson.

This is the fourth year Shiloh Battlefield will celebrate the birthday of the National Park Service with music on the battlefield. But, this year the celebration is doubled as Hardin County celebrates the bicentennial of its founding in 1819. Hardin County Mayor Kevin Davis invites everyone to join us in Shiloh for the celebration, “Shiloh has played an important role in our history as well as present and future endeavors for tourism. Bring your families and join us for this once in a lifetime salute to our Bicentennial!”

“Hardin County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Bicentennial committee is excited to be a part of this Summer Signature Event for our county’s bicentennial year,” announced Tourism Director Beth Pippin. “We are celebrating all year with numerous events such as the county-wide Selfie Scavenger Hunt, monthly luncheon presentation tour, and this wonderful free concert for all to enjoy at Shiloh!”

The concert is a free, family oriented event and starts at 5:30 pm. Concert goers are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and picnic baskets. Seating will be on a first come first served basis. Pop-up canopies and tents will not be allowed and smoking/vaping is prohibited in the audience area. Insect spray and sunscreen are recommended. The Friends of Shiloh National Military Park and the Eastern National Bookstore will have booths where concert-goers may purchase light snacks, soft drinks, bottled water, and sports drinks.

There will be a designated handicapped parking (permit required), and a drop off area. RV parking is also available, but is very limited. All parking is on a first-come-first-served basis.

A Junior Ranger booth for kids of all ages will open at noon. Children are invited to earn three different Junior Ranger badges, including the brand new wooden Shiloh Jr. Ranger badge. Other activities include temporary arrowhead tattoos, a John Wesley Powell 150th Anniversary coloring book, a dress like a Civil War soldier photo-booth, a Shiloh Instagram photo frame, and the opportunity to earn a limited John Wesley Powell trading card.
