Rising 1,500 feet (457 meters) above the Shenandoah Valley floor and marking the northern end of Massanutten Mountain is Signal Knob. Used by both sides as a signal station throughout the war, this peak was used by Confederates to observe U.S. Army camps and plan the Battle of Cedar Creek.
Signal Knob is part of George Washington National Forest. Contact the Lee Ranger District in Edinburg, Virginia for updated hiking information.
Signal Knob is included in the Cedar Creek Battlefield and Belle Grove Plantation National Historic Landmark, a program run by the National Park Service.
