Power of Wind and Water Wayside
Towering sand banks, vast dunes, a rushing creek, and the powerful waves of Lake Superior all meet at this spot. Centuries of dynamic forces created the stunning shoreline you see today.
Glaciers piled up huge boulders and stone rubble to create the Grand sable Banks. Wave action eroded bouldes to small stones and then into sand. This sand was blown on top of the banks to create the Grand Sable Dunes.
Where is Sable Creek flowing today?
The path of Sable Creek changes frequently. One year, it may flow along the beach to the right; the next, it may meander to the left.
Notice Sable Creek's reddish-brown hue. This color comes from plant tannins the water picks up on its way to Lake Superior.
