Point Lookout State Park, in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, sits on a peninsula bordered by the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River. This well-known park is steeped in American history, beginning in the pre-Colonial era, and continuing through opening its gates as a park in 1965.
During the War of 1812, British Troops used the peninsula as an encampment as they burned and looted the surrounding countryside and offered haven for enslaved people. British troops offered freedom for the enslaved people who made it to the grounds. In 1862, the grounds served as a port, hospital, garrison, and prisoner of war camp for the Union Army during the American Civil War. Thousands of soldiers perished on the grounds of Point Lookout due to harsh conditions in the marshes and swamps of the peninsula. The site is also home to the Point Lookout Lighthouse which was first commissioned in 1830 and oversaw much of the history of the park.
Point Lookout also offers many recreational opportunities including swimming, fishing, boating, and camping. Guided tours of the lighthouse are available and a nearby nature center and museum provides information on the extensive history of the park and region. The park is open daily throughout the year.
