One of the original goals of the parkway's designers was to provide visitors with a chance to “drive a while, stop a while.” With its good view, short leg stretcher trail, and opportunity for picnicking, Onion Mountain Overlook fits the bill.
Onion Mountain Overlook (3,145 feet) provides views southeast over Suck Mountain and the piedmont 2,000 feet below. The overlook is nestled into the forest with a nice view from the picnic table, and offers a short 0.2 mile loop trail on the southern end of the overlook.
Seasonal highlights include blooming rhododendrons in late spring, bird watching with migrating warblers spring and fall migrating raptors, and excellent opportunities to take in the fall colors across the expansive views in October.
Check the conditions of the area before you visit.
