The live oaks lining the entrance to the main house at Oakland are especially magnificent. These trees are believed to have been planted in the early 19th century. The allée that they form was intended to act as a “breeze way” to keep the Main House cooler by funneling breezes off Cane River. The river which sits approximately 100 yards in front of the house served as a transportation artery, food source, and recreational outlet for the communities situated on its banks.
