This is the first scenic stop on the Park Loop Road, roughly 0.4 miles from the Hulls Cove Visitor Center. From Frenchman Bay Overlook, one can see the Porcupine Islands, Schoodic Peninsula, Egg Rock in the distance, the now-unused ferry terminal, and Bar Harbor on a headland to the south.

The name "Frenchman Bay" comes from a history of French and English struggle over control of the area. The French hid their tall frigate ships amid the islands and coastline of the bay in order to ambush British ships.

The overlook can be reached by foot or bicycle. Island Explorer Buses stop upon request going outbound and then can be flagged as they return by the lower road. Park rangers or volunteers are often seen here with maps and general park information.

Use caution on the steep path from the overlook to the lower road. Do not run down for risk of falling, as there can be oncoming traffic.
