Start your exploration of the youngest lava flow in El Malpais National Monument at the Lava Falls Trailhead. From here, venture out on the 1200 - 3900 year old McCartys Lava Flow following a one-mile, cairn-marked loop across this rugged landscape. Keep an eye out for fascinating basaltic volcanic features like lava toes, ropy pāhoehoe lava, squeeze-ups, and pressure ridges.

The parking area features picnic benches and a vault toilet. To reach the parking area, you must drive down a 1/2 mile gravel road that may be difficult for oversized vehicles, particularly if muddy or slick.
