The Civil War earthworks were constructed after the Battle of Dunlap Hill, which took place July 30, 1864. The earthworks were used again that same year in November during the Battle of Walnut Creek. They are one of a few surviving Civil War earthworks in Macon.
The Civil War earthworks are at the end of the Dunlap Trail, which is 1/4th of a mile long and begins across the park road from the Visitor Center. The earthworks are near the Dunlap Mound and Dunlap House, which is now a private residence.
