The present-day Brooks Camp Visitor center was originally built as a ranger station. During the summer of 1954, logs were cut, peeled, and placed to dry for use in the following spring at Brooks Camp. By February of 1955, the park ordered building materials from Seattle and arranged for their delivery to King Salmon by a Fish and Wildlife vessel. The building was completed in the summer of 1955.
This was the National Park Service's first permanently built structure in Katmai and its first ranger station, completed thirty-seven years after the monument had been established.
