Many of the authentic artifacts date back to the 1800s and were collected from the immediate area in South Dakota. The museum walk-through is designed to guide visitors chronologically through Lakota (Sioux) history, associated with the four cardinal colors and directions. The center has been described as a “living museum” in that current issues receive as much attention as past ones. As part of the modern aspect, artwork by Lakota, Dakota and Nakota artists are highlighted and include paintings, photography, pottery, jewelry, and quilts. A gift shop offers similar authentic pieces for purchase.
There is no admission fee to the museum, although donations are gladly accepted and appreciated. Visit About the Akta Lakota Museum - Akta Lakota Museum & Cultural Center (stjo.org) for hours, special events, and more information.
