On May 15, the North Rim reopened for the season. Visitors should plan ahead and be prepared for a more remote experience this year, with limited services available as the park continues recovery and restoration work.
The 2026 season will focus mainly on day use and limited backcountry access, with some scenic drives, viewpoints, and trails open to visitors. Please keep in mind that potable water will not be available on the North Rim, so be sure to bring plenty of water and food for your visit.
Walhalla Overlook
Travelling south along Cape Royal Road, about six and a half miles (10 kilometers) past Roosevelt Point, a pullout on the left leads to a one-lane road beside Walhalla Overlook, with parking on either side. Note: Post-fire hazards and weather events may result in a temporary closure of this location.
Walhalla Overlook offers wide views into the eastern Grand Canyon and down Unkar Creek toward the Colorado River at Unkar Delta — a broad, flat area formed by sediment carried down from nearby side canyons. The delta is also the location of important archaeological sites where Indigenous people farmed and lived.
Across the road from the overlook, take the short walk to Walhalla Glades Pueblo, an Ancestral Puebloan dwelling that is about 1000 years old.
History
In 1949, archeological student Douglas W. Schwartz visited Grand Canyon for the first time. Over 30 years of field work later, his surveys and excavations in the Unkar Delta, Walhalla Plateau and Bright Angel Pueblo areas revealed significant evidence of the Ancestral Puebloan people who lived on the Delta and along Unkar Creek. He also uncovered Walhalla Glades Pueblo, located a short walk from here on the path across the road.
NOTE: RVs over 22 feet long, and vehicle-trailer combinations with a total length over 22 feet, are not permitted on Cape Royal Road and the Scenic Drive due to narrow, windy roads with blind corners.
