On May 15, the North Rim reopened for the season. Visitors should plan ahead and be prepared for a more remote experience this year, with limited services available as the park continues recovery and restoration work.

The 2026 season will focus mainly on day use and limited backcountry access, with some scenic drives, viewpoints, and trails open to visitors. Please keep in mind that potable water will not be available on the North Rim, so be sure to bring plenty of water and food for your visit.

Vista Encantada - a picnic area with a view - open for the 2026 season.

Note: Post-fire hazards and weather events may result in a temporary closure of this location.

Travelling south along Cape Royal Road, about five miles (eight kilometers) south of the ‘Y,’ past a series of curvy switchbacks, a small pullout to the left leads to the one-lane parking area of Vista Encantada. Parking is limited in this tranquil setting.

Vista Encantada — Spanish for “Enchanted View” — is one of the quieter and more peaceful overlooks on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Tucked along Cape Royal Road, it’s less famous than Point Imperial or Cape Royal, but many visitors consider it one of the North Rim’s hidden gems.

Because the viewpoint faces east and southeast, sunrise and early morning light can create striking colors across the layered cliffs and desert beyond.

Located just northwest from Roosevelt Point on Cape Royal Road, this is a fantastic place to enjoy a picnic beneath Ponderosa pine trees by the canyon rim. Several picnic tables sit right near the rim, making it one of the most relaxing places on the North Rim to stop for lunch or simply enjoy the scenery.

The overlook was made during the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, whose crews built many of the North Rim’s rustic stone walls, pullouts, and scenic roads. Vista Encantada still retains much of that classic National Park Service rustic design.
