Fort Smith had two separate officers' quarters buildings. The north officers' quarters was completed in 1852. The building had four apartments, with each apartment having four 19 ft x 16 ft rooms. Construction of this officers' quarters building was supervised by the Quartermaster Department and was considered to be of better quality than the southern quarters. It was destroyed by a fire in 1870. Lack of housing for officers was one of the reasons why the military closed Fort Smith in 1871.
