The Peirce Family settled in Montgomery County, Maryland shortly after the American Revolution. The land purchased by Isaac Peirce would soon become part of the land selected to become the District of Columbia and the new capital of the United States.
The Peirce-Shoemaker farm--also known as Cloverdale--consisted of many buildings. The National Park Service manages the Mill, Barn and Springhouse.
For many years, Peirce Barn was known as the Art Barn. Associates of Artists Equity operated a gallery and classes out of the structure.
Today Peirce Barn is a space used by the Park Service to conduct educational programs as well as interpret the history of mills and industry in the Rock Creek Valley. There is a restroom available towards the back of the barn.
