Day hikes do not require permits, but any overnight trip into the backcountry, whether below the rim or above, require a permit. You can also try for a day-of permit in person here.
- Water is available here, year round, even after the North Rim visitor services have closed for the season. Hikers may knock on the door of the North Rim Administration Building during business hours Mon-Fri for water, however water not guaranteed above Manzanita Ranger Station. (Outdoor water faucet is off - Feb. 7, 2025)
- NOTE: As of Thursday, October 17, 2024, the water bottle filling station at the North Kaibab Trailhead has been shut off for the winter.
