Cape Royal Overlook

Located at the end of the scenic Cape Royal Road, Cape Royal is the southernmost viewpoint reachable by vehicle on the North Rim. (23 mile/ 37 km from the North Rim developed area). Note: Post-fire hazards and weather events may result in a temporary closure of this location.

There is a multi-lane parking lot with a vault toilet along the north side of the lot. A picnic area is located on the west side of the parking lot.

From the parking lot, a flat, paved trail, lined with stones on either side, leads about four-tenths of a mile (650 meters) to the point at Cape Royal. The trail is relatively level, making the area accessible to many visitors.

Cape Royal sits at about 7,800 feet in elevation and provides a sweeping 270-degree view across the canyon. From the overlook, visitors can see major landmarks including the Colorado River far below, the Painted Desert to the east, and towering formations such as Freya Castle and Vishnu Temple. On clear days, the layered canyon landscape seems to stretch endlessly into the distance.

Cape Royal is considered one of the premier sunset locations in Grand Canyon National Park. As evening light moves across the canyon walls, reds, oranges, and deep purple shadows create dramatic color contrasts.

About halfway along the path from the parking lot, a smaller paved path to the left leads to an overlook with guardrails, along the top of Angels Window.
