Ferns in the Arid Landscape of Pinnacles

The dry climate of Pinnacles may seem like an unlikely place for ferns to thrive. However, during the summer months, deep canyons provide shade for moisture-loving species such as maidenhair and horsetail ferns. Notably, Pinnacles is home to the Giant chain fern, a species typically found in coniferous forests and wooded habitats, like those in Muir Woods National Monument.

In addition, several fern species at Pinnacles are adapted to much drier conditions, including:

  • Bird’s Foot Fern
  • Three Leaf Tree Foil
  • Coffee Fern

These smaller species are among the few plants that can survive in the iconic, rocky, barren areas of the park.

Explore the photo gallery below to help you identify the fern species you may encounter during your visit to Pinnacles.
