Jacob Flanders (born 1758) of South Hampton, New Hampshire, had his whole life ahead of him. So committed to liberty’s cause was he that the 18-year-old enlisted for the war’s duration in the 2nd New Hampshire Regiment. Jacob’s captain, John Drew, was so impressed with his recruit that the teen was promoted to corporal.

Corporal Flanders fought in the Battle of Hubbardton, Vermont, on July 7, 1777, as well as the First Battle of Saratoga on September 19. He also fought in the Second Battle on October 7, but he fell, wounded.

Unfortunately, the wound was mortal, and Jacob lingered in the hospital in agonizing pain for a week before passing away on October 15. The teen’s horrified family only learned of his death when they received “some of his Clothes that was sent home with ball holes in them and stained with Blood.”

Jacob’s remains were probably buried in the hospital burial yard in Albany.
