Federal Lands Transportation Program Partners

Federal funding for roads, trails, and bridges in the national park system began in 1924. In January 1925, the first interagency agreement between the NPS and the Bureau of Public Roads (BPR)—the predecessor of today's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) — was struck. Under the agreement, the BPR provided road design and construction assistance while the NPS brought technical expertise, landscape values, and aesthetic direction. This relationship continues today, through a Memorandum of Agreement signed in 1983, making it the longest-running formal partnership between any two federal agencies. In addition to our internal partners, such as the NPS Denver Service Center and transportation professionals in parks and regions around the country, the Federal Lands Transportation Program (FLTP) continues to work with other public sector and private sector partners around the country.
