Each year, the THPOs answer a series of questions about the work accomplished, based on the functions they have assumed from the State Historic Preservation Offices under Section 101 of the National Historic Preservation Act. A tribe actively pursues Section 101 status, and most assume eight of the ten functions. In 1996, the first year of the program, 12 tribes applied for and received Section 101 status. Since then, the numbers keep growing. In 2016, there were 169 THPOs, and currently in 2022, there are 208 THPOs. The data from the annual reports are summed and included below by year.
