Now a sunken roadbed, the Island Ford Road was one of several important roads that traveled through the community of Ninety Six. Traversing north, this road crossed the Saluda River at the Island Ford. The American troops descended on Ninety Six using this road.

Today you can see grassy fields and woods surrounding the Star Fort. In 1781, the area was cleared for a mile around, leaving only dirt and tree stumps.
