About The Artist:
April Jakubec, is the current Artist-in-Residence for the park. She will be in the MakerSpace studio on Thursdays and Fridays through the end of her residency. April paints bright, dynamic portraits of women that live with a mental health struggles. She paints her subjects with floral adornments that block the face, which evokes contagious joy and lightness. Her proposal is strong and ambitious, and she aims to paint four 60" x 48" portraits of New Bedford women that are living with a mental health struggles.
April Jakubec is first and foremost a mental health advocate, working on her PhD to promote the human rights of adults with severe mental illness. As a sort of self-therapy to cope with her own mental health struggles, April has put her own vision of mental health on canvas— fearlessly glam women adorned with sparkling blooms. She aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues by creating positive and bright portraits of women’s mental health and promoting humanizing conversations around her work.
