Flintlock Musket, Militia

American
1760 – 1770

This flintlock musket offers an excellent example of the construction of American military muskets in the period before the American Revolution. The weapon's design follows that of the British Land Service Pattern or "Brown Bess" musket. Like many early American firearms, this musket is constructed from components collected from various European arms. The brass furniture includes a side plate, ramrod pipes, and cast-brass butt plate. The iron barrel is pinned to the stock and, in a manner characteristic of early American weapons, is cut back to fit a bayonet stud.
