Hobos have been riding the rails since the Civil War. The romanticized image of the hobo emerged during the Depression when many men left home in search of work. However, hopping on trains was illegal and some hoboes damaged property. This led to constant battles with the railroad police, who sometimes used extremely aggressive tactics.
