About this Portrait: Charles Willson Peale painted the museum portrait of Varnum 15 years after the subject had died. Peale may have copied from the miniature (now unlocated) that he had painted of the subject at Valley Forge in 1778 as a source for the museum portrait. In 1804, Peale returned to painting after several years spent away from his easel in order to concentrate on expanding the museum's many collections and moving them to the second floor of the Pennsylvania State House. He noted that I now paint better portraits than I ever did. . .all better colouring then my former works, so that the fire of youth is not equal to matured Idea's [sic] in the fine arts. Ownership History: Listed in the 1813 Peale Museum catalog. Purchased by the City of Philadelphia at the 1854 Peale Museum sale. ![]() |
