The Fort was established in 1862 to protect the Nez Perce from the steady stream of settlers coming into the area. It was from Fort Lapwai that a cavalry force was sent and defeated in the opening battle of the 1877 war. The post was decommissioned in 1884 and became the headquarters for the Indian Agent.
