Nez Perce National Historical Park

Mortar
This wood mortar is shaped like a Klikitat-style basket. It was used to process foodstuffs with a pestle. Roots and berries could be ground without spilling. Wooden “ears” on the rim facilitated a handle of hemp or other cordage. It came to the park from the Nez Perce tribe.
