The spoons seen here may have been associated with the last survivor of the Nez Perce War, Josiah Redwolf. Horns were carved into spoons and ladles by first immersing them in boiling water. This treatment made the horn pliable and easier to work with. They were carved and then air dried. This allowed the softer horn core to separate from the harder material on the exterior.
